Who Left It On?

Key art. At night in the rain, a person in a blue coat and red scarf and their travelling companion reach the barrier of a lit water plant, under the game’s title in glitching pixel letters.

The world is in a water crisis. Many treatment plants were abandoned because the water coming out of them was contaminated, and you reach one of them to find out what is happening. Something’s in the water.

The game

A narrative mystery adventure, in pixel art.

A serious, cinematic story about a world running out of water, its most valuable resource, and falling into crisis because of it.

Many treatment plants were abandoned because the water coming out of them was contaminated. You arrive at night at one of them, and your mission is to find out what happened and bring it back to life. It’s played in chapters, like a series, in the browser on your computer or phone.

The world

Transmission · Link Network

  1. 01 The silence

For years, the Link Network kept the world’s treatment plants connected. Then, one by one, they fell silent.

  2. 02 A world in the dark

Plants out of service. Systems abandoned. Signals that stopped answering. Nobody knows yet what happened.

  3. 03 A signal

But some stations are still there. One has just answered.

  4. 04 Your station

It is damaged and waiting for someone to start it again. Restore it. Recover the signal.

    More chapters

The author’s plan is to release a new chapter about once a month. It’s an intention and not a promise, because the game is made by one person.

Who makes it

Made by one person

I had wanted to tell this story for a long time, and I wanted to tell it through play, in chapters, like a series. Water connects all of us, which is why it is at the heart of Who Left It On? Everything in the game is fiction.

I write the story, design the mechanics and build every chapter on my own, with Tale Rocket, an editor I made so I wouldn’t have to program each scene. For part of the art I rely on AI tools. The story, the design and the decisions are mine.

I publish it for free so anyone can play it in their browser.

Questions

Quick questions

All frequently asked questions
Is it free?

Yes. It’s a personal project and it’s free to play in the browser. If you like, you can support the project.

Do I need to download anything?

No. It plays in the browser on your computer or phone, upright or on its side. If you like it, you can install it as an app from the browser itself.

Do I need an account?

Not to try chapter 1, although that game isn’t saved. With a free account (email or Google) the game saves by itself and you can carry on on another device.

How long is a chapter?

It depends on how much you explore. You play at your own pace and, with an account, you can stop whenever you like and carry on later.

Who Left It On?

Somebody left it on. Go and find out who.
